Homes and roofs in Ely
Local homes
Medieval and Georgian buildings near the cathedral, Victorian brick terraces with slate roofs, fenland cottages with clay pantiles, post-war and modern estates, and flat-roofed extensions.
The flat, open fens around the Isle of Ely give the wind nothing to slow it down, so ridges, verges, chimneys and lead flashings take more punishment than in sheltered towns.
Around Ely
- Ely Cathedral, begun in 1083 on the site of the monastery founded by Etheldreda in 673
- Oliver Cromwell's House, the former home of Oliver Cromwell in the city
- The riverside along the Great Ouse
- The Isle of Ely, the area of higher ground on which the city stands above the fens
Planning and listed buildings
Like-for-like roof repairs usually do not need permission, but work to listed buildings, or changes in a conservation area, may need consent from East Cambridgeshire District Council. We will flag this before any work starts.
